Mackay Sugar
As one of our regions largest employers, and as Australia’s second largest sugar manufacturer, we proudly produce raw sugar for local and international markets, averaging 700,000 tonnes per year.
Our Cogeneration Plant, which is situated at Racecourse Mill, uses sugar cane waste to produce enough steam and electricity for powering the mill and the co-located raw sugar refinery, as well as approximately one third of the Mackay region’s annual electrical power requirements; the equivalent of around 27,000 households (approximately 130,000MWh).
In addition to raw sugar and green electricity, our product base includes mill mud and ash (which is distributed to our growers and applied to their cane paddocks as a beneficial soil conditioner) as well as molasses, along with refined sugar via our partnership with Sugar Australia’s CSR Refinery.
In 2019 one of Europe's leading sugar manufacturers, Nordzucker Group, became Mackay Sugar’s majority shareholder and continues to make significant investment in our plant and people, along with bringing a network of global ideas, innovation and opportunities to ensure the long-term sustainability of our business and Mackay’s sugar cane industry.
