New CEO takes the reins at Mackay Sugar

Mackay Sugar, Australia’s second largest sugar producer, has today welcomed its new CEO Carl Morton, into the top job.
Mr Morton, previously Mackay Sugar’s General Manager Operations, was successfully appointed to the CEO role in June and since then has been completing an extensive handover with outgoing CEO, Jannik Olejas who returns to Denmark to take the role as Managing Director as of January 2025.
“I am very excited to officially step into the role from today,” said Mr Morton. “Mackay Sugar has an exciting future ahead and I’m proud to have the opportunity to shape what that looks like,” he said.
“Mackay Sugar has been such an important contributor to our region and the community for generations – and this is a legacy I am eager to build on to ensure we secure a sustainable business for decades to come,” explained Mr Morton.
Tasked with delivering the company’s significant multi-year investment program and furthering the business’s commercial strategy, Mr Morton has the full support and backing of Mackay Sugar’s Board of Directors as well as the company’s majority shareholder, Nordzucker Group.

“Nordzucker Group sees a strong future for our Australian sugar business, and the Board is eager to see a smooth transition to this new leadership, enabled by Carl’s in-depth knowledge of our strategy to and commitment to continue our improvement programs,” said Mr Gerloff.
Prior to starting at Mackay Sugar in 2022, Carl held various leadership positions within Australia’s sugar industry as well as within several manufacturing companies both locally and in New Zealand.
Given the internal promotion, Mackay Sugar is progressing well with its recruitment of a suitable candidate for Carl’s replacement as General Manager Operations.
